Quick answer: Winter break in Orlando for 2026-27 runs December 21, 2026 through January 1, 2027 for Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Polk county schools, with students back on January 4, 5 or 6 depending on the district. A good family itinerary for that window uses one big park morning at a time, a real nap at the vacation home, one slow day (pool or beach) between park days, and an early evening for the holiday lights and shows. Sunset is only about 5:30 pm, so the evening is short, and Disney had not published park hours past December 11 when we checked.

We checked each date below against the official school district, park or event page on October 12, 2026. Dates and hours change, so confirm before you book.

Key Takeaways

  • All four central Florida districts we checked start winter break on Monday, December 21, 2026. Break runs through January 1, and students return January 4, 5 or 6 depending on the county.
  • If your children's school is outside these four counties, its winter break may be different. Check your own calendar before you buy tickets or book a home.
  • Most holiday events run well past Christmas: Holidays at Universal through January 3, SeaWorld's Christmas Celebration into early January, EPCOT's Festival of the Holidays through December 30.
  • Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party ends December 22, so it is not an option for the week after Christmas.
  • Honest Sherpa's site says it is closed on December 25, so schedule gear delivery and pickup around that day.

Florida school winter break dates for 2026-27

These come from each district's official 2026-27 calendar. Winter break starts on the same Monday in all four, but the return date differs by a day or two.

DistrictLast day before breakWinter breakStudents return
Orange County (OCPS)Friday, December 18December 21 to January 1Tuesday, January 5 (January 4 is a teacher workday and student holiday)
Osceola CountyFriday, December 18 (early release listed)December 21 to January 1Monday, January 4
Seminole CountyFriday, December 18 (early dismissal December 16 to 18)December 21 to 31, with January 1 a system holidayWednesday, January 6 (January 4 and 5 are closed for students, but listed as make-up days if needed)
Polk CountyFriday, December 18 (early dismissal)Begins December 21; January 1 is a holidayWednesday, January 6 (January 4 and 5 are no school for students; January 5 is also listed as a possible storm make-up day)

If you live outside these four counties, your own district sets its own winter break, so check yours. If your children's break is shorter or longer than two weeks, anchor your plan to the Christmas and New Year's events below instead of the local school dates. Two cautions on the table: Polk's calendar PDF is headed "tentative" and "dates are subject to change" (its calendar page lists the 2026-27 calendar as revised February 24, 2026), and Seminole and Polk list January 4 or 5 as possible make-up days. Confirm with your district before you lock in dates. We found no official crowd forecast for the holidays, so we do not predict how busy the parks will be.

A seven-day winter break framework

You can swap the days around, but the rhythm matters more than the order. Alternate big days with easy days, and put the biggest park day in the middle of the trip, when everyone is settled in.

DayThemeHow to run it with little kids
1Arrive and settleGroceries, set up cribs and car seats, a short pool or playground visit, early bed
2Park morningArrive at opening, ride and see shows until lunch, back to the house by 1 pm for a nap
3Slow dayPool or a beach day (see our winter beaches guide) with an early dinner
4Holiday eveningNap in the afternoon, then a holiday show, parade or lights after sunset, home by bedtime
5Second park morningA different park, again morning only, with a nap and a quiet afternoon
6Flex dayRain or tired kids? Repeat a favorite, or visit an indoor option or the zoo
7Pack and departLeave plenty of time for the airport and the car seat swap

The nap plan: how to run a December park day

December days are short. Sunrise is about 7:10 am and sunset about 5:30 pm in mid-December (timeanddate.com), and NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normal temperatures at Orlando International Airport for December 15 are a high of 73.9°F and a low of 53.1°F. That makes mornings pleasant and evenings cool. A simple pattern works for most toddlers:

  • Opening to noon: park time, in the cooler hours, with the stroller doing double duty as a snack bar.
  • Noon to 1 pm: lunch in the park or on the way out.
  • 1 to 3:30 pm: nap at the rental. A toddler who naps in the stroller can stay, but a real nap in a crib or Pack and Play often helps the whole evening go better.
  • 4 to 5:30 pm: snack, jackets, then back out only if the toddler is rested. Otherwise stay in, because holiday shows start after dark.
  • By 8 pm: in the car or heading to bed.

Our Orlando weather in December guide covers the layers to bring for the early morning and evening, and our Orlando packing list for December covers each park's bag rules.

Stroller advice for winter break

A stroller is a toddler's nap bed, a bag carrier and a lifesaver in a long line. Rules and rentals vary by park:

  • Disney: its property rules prohibit strollers over 31 inches wide and 52 inches long, and wagons are not allowed in any theme park or water park. Bags and coolers larger than 24" x 15" x 18" are also prohibited.
  • Universal: its FAQ lists stroller rentals at $40 per day including tax (the page says prices are subject to change).
  • SeaWorld: its FAQ says single and double strollers are rented first come, first served near Guest Services.

Honest Sherpa's stroller category lists single, umbrella, jogging and double strollers, a Sit and Stand Double Stroller and a City Mini Double Stroller (the last two say they meet Disney size requirements), and rain covers. See our guides on Universal stroller rentals and baby gear rentals for how rentals at the park compare with delivery to your vacation home.

What to book for the house

If you are staying in a vacation home, these Honest Sherpa categories match a winter break trip:

Honest Sherpa's site says it operates every day of the year except Christmas and shows "We are closed on December 25." If you are renting for Christmas week, choose delivery and pickup dates that avoid that day.

Visiting Walt Disney World at winter break

Disney's holidays page lists three events that touch late December. Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party runs select nights from November 8 to December 22, 2026, so it is over before the week after Christmas. EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays runs November 27 to December 30, 2026, with performances at America Gardens Theatre. Disney Jollywood Nights at Disney's Hollywood Studios runs select nights from November 7, 2026 to January 5, 2027. Check Disney's page for nights and ticket requirements. Disney's hours calendar only showed days through December 11 when we checked on October 12, so plan flexibly for park hours, and see our guides to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party with toddlers and EPCOT's Festival of the Holidays with kids.

Visiting Universal and SeaWorld at winter break

Universal Orlando's holiday season runs November 14, 2026 to January 3, 2027, with Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Grinchmas, Universal's Holiday Parade featuring Macy's, Snoggletog at How to Train Your Dragon - Isle of Berk and festive decor at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. SeaWorld's Christmas Celebration is included with park admission and its page lists a Sesame Street Christmas Parade, Winter Wonderland on Ice and Holiday Reflections, which the page says runs every night until January 1 and can be viewed around the lagoon at park close. See our Universal Orlando Christmas with kids guide and SeaWorld Christmas Celebration with toddlers guide. If you are comparing parks, our Disney versus Universal with babies guide covers the stroller rules.
